The Creatives | Through his gender-fluid label Ponder.er, Derek Cheng is reshaping the future of menswear with quiet defiance

For Derek Cheng, co-founder of Hong Kong fashion label Ponder.er, the desire to disrupt the status quo was sparked during his boarding school years in the UK. He later attended Central Saint Martins in London, where he met his future creative partner, Alex Po. Though their personal styles differed, both shared a commitment to challenging menswear conventions—a vision that now defines their brand.

After graduating, Cheng and Po returned to Hong Kong in 2019 to launch Ponder.er. Within a year, they made their commercial debut, carving a niche by reinterpreting techniques like smocking—traditionally linked to childrenswear—into contemporary menswear. In 2024, their bold vision earned them a semi-finalist place in the prestigious LVMH Prize. Celebrities such as Lil Nas X, K-pop girl group Itzy and Seventeen’s Mingyu have all been spotted in the brand's garments.

For Cheng, style is an evolving reflection of self. “It’s about pushing the boundaries of what style can be—and encouraging people to explore their own identity through clothing.”
